My Culture is NOT a Costume
When it comes to Halloween, a lot of people dress up and enjoy the day. They dress up as one of the characters of movies, dramas, or TV shows, or sometimes they dress up with traditional clothes of a specific country. People who wear costumes that imitate one's tradition and culture might don't know that it's inappropriate and they just try to use them as a humorous and hilarious item. However, they need to recognize the preciousness of one's culture and consider about the feelings of the people involved in that nation or a culture. They might feel insulted, unpleasant, and sad. It is literally rude and disrespectful to mock their culture and make fun of it. The imitation of traditional clothes is ruining the cultural identity and the national spirit. When I was in grade 8, I saw a student who wore Korean traditional clothes and acts like a Korean on Halloween. I didn't feel good and I felt that as a racism but no one told him that it's inappropriate. They didn't know why it was a serious situation. However, I think it's necessary to teach children or students about inappropriate costumes. The best way to prevent and avoid these situations is education. If we learn that is not right to use cultural clothes as a Halloween costume, we can deter people from wearing such costumes. In addition, using social media to publicize the message and idea is a good method. Making a lot of people to recognize these problems of inappropriate costumes and leading them to enjoy Halloween in a proper way is the best solution!
